Cieplice and Surrounding Area
Cieplice is one of the districts of Jelenia Góra, a city located in the heart of the Karkonosze Mountains in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. Due to its spa status, the full name of this part of the city is Cieplice Śląskie-Zdrój.
The most valuable treasure of Cieplice, which has been operating as a spa resort since 1281, is its therapeutic thermal waters, with temperatures reaching 90°C. Over the centuries, many distinguished guests have visited the local springs, including John Quincy Adams (later President of the United States), Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Polish Queen Marysieńka Sobieska, Duchess Izabela Czartoryska, Prince Stanisław Poniatowski (the king’s nephew), and poet Wincenty Pol.
To this day, Cieplice delights with its well-preserved historical architecture. The most important sites include the spa pavilions, the Spa Theater, the “Długi Dom” (Long House), the Schaffgotsch Palace, the Cistercian Monastery Complex, and two extensive, beautiful, and revitalized parks: Zdrojowy and Norwegian.
It’s worth mentioning that the Schaffgotsch Palace is part of the Valley of Palaces and Gardens, which, over an area of just 102 km² around Jelenia Góra, includes nearly 30 Gothic castles, defensive towers, manor houses, Baroque palaces, and 19th-century residences, such as Wojanów Palace, Łomnica Palace, Karpniki Castle, Staniszów Palace, Pakoszów Palace, and the Palace on the Water in Staniszów.
Another major attraction of Cieplice is the modern and diverse pool and spa complex “Termy Cieplickie”, located on the border of both aforementioned parks and in close proximity to the Agnes Apartment. Cieplice is also home to numerous shops, markets, dining establishments, post offices, and sports fields. Jelenia Góra is well-connected with city bus transportation.
The city center of Jelenia Góra, only 6 km from Cieplice, also offers a wealth of attractions, including numerous historical sites, museums, exhibitions, parks, sports and recreational facilities, shopping malls, playgrounds, cinemas, theaters, restaurants, clubs, and pubs.
Neighboring towns provide residents and visitors with even more attractions. While in the area, it’s worth visiting the Miniature Park in Kowary, the Kowary Adits, the Julia Crystal Glassworks in Piechowice, or setting out on mountain trails in the Karkonosze, starting from Karpacz or Szklarska Poręba.
